LASIK Surgery

Are you considering vision correction options that go beyond glasses and contact lenses? Chances are you’re exploring LASIK eye surgery. In Fresno, EMC is home to one of the leading corneal and laser vision correction surgeons in the field, Dr. Mehdi Ghajar.

Is LASIK For You?

Laser vision correction, LASIK & PRK, are safe and effective procedures in the hands of an experienced & specialized surgeon.  They are the most popular elective procedures performed in the world. So, are you a good candidate for LASIK? Not everyone considering the procedure should have it, and a thorough exam needs to be performed by an ophthalmologist to see if you are a good candidate.

Even though each patient’s situation is different, some general guidelines to consider when thinking about getting LASIK surgery include:

  • Age: LASIK surgery can be performed on patients as young as 18, but the ideal window for LASIK surgery is between 21 and 55. The reason for this is because many younger or older patients have vision that is changing. Younger patients have eyes that are still growing and older patients begin to develop cataracts and start needing reading glasses. We want the vision to remain stable, and this typically occurs when patients are in the range of 21 to 55 years of age.
  • Prescription: Patients should have a stable prescription for at least a year before getting LASIK surgery. If your prescription keeps changing, LASIK is not a good option.
  • Nursing/pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy and nursing can alter your prescription making LASIK not a good option.
  • Overall health: Patients should be in good health otherwise and not have other eye conditions that could increase the risk of complications.
  • Corneal thickness: Corneas that are too thin are not safe to have LASIK performed. Our ophthalmologists will measure the thickness of your corneas to ensure they are safe for LASIK.

Lasik Evaluation

One of the most important aspects of LASIK surgery is the pre-operative evaluation. This is an opportunity for our refractive coordinator and doctor, as well as, the patient to discuss expectations, goals, and the best options for surgery.  This is just one aspect of care provided in Dr. Ghajar’s practice, which sets us apart.

You may get a discounted rate at large laser discount centers, but usually, you don’t get to meet the surgeon until day of surgery. Lack of pre-operative evaluation by the surgeon is often what leads to problems for patients. Moreover, Dr. Ghajar will typically follow you for at least 1 year after surgery to make sure you have the best outcome.

What are the costs for Lasik?

The cost for LASIK eye surgery is an convenient, all-inclusive fee which includes:
